First ever musical adaptation of the well known writer Charles Dickens’s narration, Oliver, is a classic tale based on the life of an innocent orphan. The show has thrilled the audiences for over a decade and now is being revived after a long time with an even more polished choreography and a creative set design.
The musical has a successful history of being played in 22 different languages at the London Palladium, qualifying to be a favorite for people of all ages. It grossed approximately £40 million in just the initial few years of display and anticipates an even better audience response this time.
The story of the musical revolves around a young boy who is titled as an orphan as soon as he is born, after the death of his mother while giving birth to him on a street in England. He opens his eyes in the lap of a caretaker Mrs. Mann. She along with Mr. Bumble takes the responsibility of raising the young child and names him Oliver Twist. Oliver spends the early nine years of his life in a badly run small house of young orphans. As soon as he turns ten, he is moved to the workhouse for adults. In all innocence, he falls prey to the evil pranks of the older boys and gets bullied by them. As a punishment on asking for more food, he is apprenticed for five pounds to a local undertaker Mr. Sowerberry. His stay with his new care taker doesn’t last long, since he enters into a fight with another apprentice Noah Claypole on making disparaging comments about his mother. Oliver enraged, leaves his new home and travels to London. The story takes a twist here leading to a series of thrilling events. The starved young boy in search of food in the new city meets Jack Hawkins. He appears as an angel to Oliver for offering him food and shelter in the house of his benefactor, Fagin. Having no other option, he accepts the offer.
Fagin is a career criminal of London, who professionally trains young boys to pick pockets for him. Oliver, a complete stranger in the city, unaware of Fagin’s evil intentions joins the gang. This marks the beginning of a new life for the orphan. He is sent on expeditions accompanied by the other boys to pick pockets. His companions being professionally trained escape the troubles smartly in case of an encounter every time, getting him trapped. Strangely these encounters prove to be fortunate for Oliver and make him come across kind hearted gentlemen, who actually believes him and try to help him out. Fagin and his gang with their wicked ideas keep chasing him, till the story takes an unexpected turn. The thrilling play with a violent climax and exciting trail scenes keeps the element of suspense intact throughout the show.
The interesting story is a timeless classic and this year is being revived with an assured flamboyance under the direction of Rupert Goold. Choreography being the responsibility of Matthew Bourne is spectacularly done, while the picturesque multi level sets are designed by Anthony Ward.
