Later as his passion grew, he decided to take music as his career, apart from playing his role as a film maker. He co-directed a documentary film titled 'Thicker than Water' which was released in 2000. Other than the direction, Johnson also gave the sound track of the movie.

Jack Johnson produced his first demo tape that featured four tracks from him. This demo tape was them passed on to J. P. Plunier - a producer who also produced for Ben Harper. After lending his ears to Johnson's demo tape, Plunier decided to work with him on his debut album, which was released in 2001 by the title of Brushfire Fairytales.

In the following year Johnson also laid the foundation to Brushfire Records, and also in the same year he starred and directed another surf film titled "The September Sessions". Moreover he also worked on the soundtracks of the movie.

Jack Johnson once again headed towards the studio in order to record his second studio album which was released on May 6, 2003 by the title of On and On. Apart from being his second studio album, "On and On" was also Johnson's first album that he recorded in his own Mango Tree Studio.

After teaming up with Zach Gill, Topol and Podlewski, Johnson ended up in studio once again, to record his third studio album "In Between Dreams" that was released in October 2004. Although the album didn't charted in European Charts, but it did considerably well in Australia and United States, where it peaked at #1 and #2 spot respectively. The album featured his hit tracks such as "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing","Good People", and "Better Together".

On February 7, 2008, Jack Johnson came up with yet another album and this time it was a soundtrack album entitled "Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George". Once again, Johnson managed to grab the #1 spot on both Australian and U.S Billboard 200 Chart. This made his album the first soundtrack ever, since 2003 to peak at #1 spot.

Johnson went on a world tour in 2008, but before that he released his fourth studio album "Sleep through the Static" which was produced by J.P. Plunier yet again. Apart from Johnson the album featured the rest of his band members, Topol, Podlewski and Gill.With that release, Johnson caused quite a stir in U.K as well and this became his first album ever to peak #1 spot on the UK Albums Chart. Moreover, it sold well over 167,000 units in UK and received BPI Gold Status.

His follow up album "To the Sea" is presently in the production process and is scheduled to be released somewhere around this year.
