Les Miserables, literally translated as "The Wretched" or "The Miserable Ones" is a two act play based on the 1864 novel of the same name by prominent playwright Victor Hugo. Widely acclaimed all over the world, Les Miserables has taken the stage in more than forty countries and has been translated into twenty-one different languages. From the exciting West Coast of the United States to the island paradise of Mauritius to the cosmopolitan and lively Hong Kong – Les Miserables has captivated audiences and captured minds and hearts all over the world more than any other musical. The musical by Claude-Michel Schonberg first opened in 1980, at Palais des Sports in Paris, and received much appraisal for its portrayal of 19th century France. This powerfully emotional play that includes virtually every aspect of life; injustice, crime, persecution and love is guaranteed to knock your socks off.
The musical begins with the story of Jean Valjean, portrayed by Simon Bowman. Valjean is sent to prison when he is caught stealing some bread to feed his sister’s starving children. Once released, he finds himself labeled as a social outcast, and attempts to make ends meet by stealing some silver from the Bishop of Digne. Valjean is caught in the act, but the Bishop admits to rewarding him with the silver, giving him a free pass for a new life. The constant bullying by police inspector Javert, played by Norm Lewis, forces him to break his parole and change his name to Monsieur Madeleine. Eight years later, a successful businessman and Mayor, Valjean is confronted with a new challenge: One of his employees, a woman by the name of Fantine has a daughter out of wedlock. Now a social outcast herself, she quits her job and resorts to selling herself in order to provide a better life for her daughter. Cosette, Fantine’s daughter, played by Lucie Jones, is adopted by Valjean, and falls deeply in love with a young revolutionary named Marius. As the revolutionaries are hunted down across the country, Valjean barely manages to save Marius from the executioner’s sword by hiding in a sewer. Valjean, ashamed of his past, and confident enough to leave his adopted daughter and her new love on their own, leaves the country.
Every actor performs his or her roles with such a level of passion and dedication that it brings a whole new meaning to a stage performance. The contagious numbers including ‘I Dreamed a Dream’, ‘Master of the House’, ‘One Day More’ as well as ‘Finale’ keep the audience entertained and truly allow the actors to show the extent of their talent. A large amount of credit goes to the costume designers for creating highly accurate, turn-of-the century clothing and creating authentic impressions with the clever application of makeup and excellently made wigs. It is little wonder then, that the show has won over 70 major awards, which are too extensive to list here, but give you an idea of the individuality of this musical.
